🐟 Tetra Fish & Ghost Shrimp Care Guide

Tetras are small, colourful freshwater fish that are popular for community aquariums due to their peaceful nature and schooling behaviour.

Ghost shrimps are amazing at eating algae, making our tanks look great. They work hard to eat the algae, keeping our tanks healthy and balanced. This makes them a vital part of our underwater world.

Note: Fish instincts are to eat anything fits their mouth. Therefore, please consider if you have fish from 3-4cm can attack the shrimp.

📏 Tank Size

Minimum tank: 40–60 litres (10–15 gallons)

Larger tanks are recommended for bigger schools and stability

Long tanks are better than tall ones (they love horizontal swimming)

🌡 Water Parameters

Temperature: 22–26°C

pH: 6.0–7.5

Hardness: Soft to moderately hard

Ammonia/Nitrite: 0 ppm

Nitrate: < 20 ppm

⚠️ Stable water conditions are more important than “perfect” numbers.

🧑🤝🧑 Schooling Behaviour

Keep at least 6–10 tetras / ghost shrimp of the same species

Larger schools = better colour, less stress

Mixing different tetra species is fine in bigger tanks

🍽 Feeding

Omnivorous

Feed high-quality flakes or micro pellets

Supplement with:

Frozen or live foods (brine shrimp, daphnia, bloodworms)

Feed small amounts 1–2 times daily

💡 Uneaten food should be gone within 2 minutes.

🌿 Tank Setup

Use live plants or soft artificial plants

Dark substrate enhances colour

Provide open swimming space

Gentle filtration (strong flow stresses them)

🐠 Tank Mates

Good tank mates:

Other tetras

Rasboras

Corydoras

Small peaceful gouramis

Shrimp (with caution for very small shrimp)

Avoid:

Aggressive or fin-nipping fish

Fish that’s bigger than 4cm in size

Large predatory species

🩺 Health & Care

Sensitive to sudden changes

Always acclimate slowly

Quarantine new fish when possible

Signs of stress:

Faded colour

Clamped fins

Hiding or erratic swimming

🧼 Maintenance

Weekly 20–30% water change

Clean filter media gently (tank water only)

Test water regularly
