The Red Jewel Cichlid (Hemichromis bimaculatus) is a vibrant freshwater fish known for its striking red coloration and aggressive behavior. Here's what's special about them and a care guide:
Special Features:
1. Coloration: They exhibit bright red or red-orange bodies with iridescent blue spots, especially prominent during breeding.
2. Behavior: Known for their territorial and aggressive nature, especially during breeding.
3. Breeding: They are relatively easy to breed in captivity and are known for their devoted parental care.
Care Guide:
1. Tank Size: A minimum of 30 gallons for a pair, with larger tanks recommended for community setups.
2. Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- Hardness: 5-15 dGH
3. Substrate and Decor: Use sand or fine gravel with plenty of hiding spots like caves, rocks, and driftwood. They appreciate planted tanks, but ensure plants are robust as they might dig or uproot them.
4. Diet: Omnivorous. Provide a varied diet including high-quality flakes, pellets, live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and vegetable matter.
5. Tank Mates: Due to their aggression, they are best kept with other robust and similarly sized fish. Avoid small, slow-moving, or overly passive fish.
6. Breeding:
- Setup: Provide flat rocks or surfaces for spawning.
- Behavior: Pairs form strong bonds and become highly territorial during breeding. The female lays eggs on flat surfaces, and both parents guard the eggs and fry.
- Fry Care: Once free-swimming, feed fry with finely crushed flakes or baby brine shrimp.
Additional Tips:
- Regular water changes and good filtration are essential to maintain water quality.
- Monitor their behavior, especially in community tanks, to prevent bullying or harm to other fish.
- Provide a balanced diet to enhance their coloration and health.
By following these guidelines, you can maintain a healthy and visually stunning environment for your Red Jewel Cichlids.

However, the shrimp and fish you receive may be discolored and the reason of this issue is strong vibration during transportation and they're not be fed during the transport period
To handle this problem we highly recommend to you:
🚩Let the fish relax helps them adapt to any changes in water temperature in the tank. Also prevents pH shock - an imbalance between the water in the shop tank and your tank.
🚩Place the fish bag in a cool, corner, and dark place. Prevent the bag from being bumped, slipped, or dropped. This'll give your new fish a good recovery and acclimatization after a shaky ride from the shop to your home.
🚩Feed your old fish first to distract them, preventing them from bullying your new fish.
🚩Your new aquarium tank should have a pH of zero ammonia and chlorine before adding new fish.
🚩Turn off the lights, reduce the glare in the room, or limit the light entering the aquarium. This will help the new fish not be stressed.
