Habitat and Tank Setup
  • Tank Size: A minimum of 15-20 gallons is recommended for a small school, but a longer tank is preferable for ample swimming space.
  • Substrate & Decor: Use a fine, dark substrate (sand or gravel) to help their colors pop. They appreciate a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots created by live plants (like Amazon Swords or Java Fern), driftwood, and rocks.
  • Lighting: Moderate, subdued lighting is suitable. Floating plants can help diffuse bright light and create a more comfortable environment.
  • Filtration: A quality filter is essential for maintaining clean, stable water conditions. A gentle to moderate flow is preferred, as strong currents can stress them. Ensure the filter is powerful enough to process the tank's water volume multiple times per hour.
  • Water Maintenance: Perform regular weekly water changes of 25-30% to keep nitrates below 20 ppm.
Behavior and Tank Mates
  • Social Behavior: Bleeding heart tetras are schooling fish and thrive in groups of at least six individuals; larger groups will encourage more natural behavior and reduce stress.
  • Temperament: Generally peaceful and well-behaved in a community tank. However, they can be prone to fin-nipping if kept individually or in very small groups.
  • Compatible Tank Mates: Good companions include other peaceful tetras, rasboras, gouramis, and bottom-dwelling species like Corydoras catfish. Avoid housing them with aggressive or large fish that might bully them, and also avoid species with long, flowing fins (like Bettas or fancy guppies) that could be targets for nipping.
Diet and Feeding
As omnivores, bleeding heart tetras require a varied diet of high-quality flakes or pellets, supplemented with small live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. They should be fed small amounts that can be consumed within two minutes, one to two times daily.
