A female guppy gives birth roughly every 30 days — so knowing the signs of delivery is the difference between finding 30 new fry in the moss and finding none (because the adults ate them first). Here are the 9 signs we watch for in our own breeding room, in the order they usually appear.
How long are guppies pregnant?
Gestation runs 21–30 days, faster in warmer water (25–27°C). A healthy female can store sperm and produce several batches from a single mating — which is why one female often "mysteriously" keeps producing fry for months. Not sure she's pregnant at all? The 9 signs delivery is close
- The gravid spot turns dark. The patch near her anal fin darkens to deep brown-black as fry develop — the most reliable early signal.
- Her belly "squares off". A rounded belly becomes noticeably boxy in the last days before birth.
- You can see fry eyes. In light-coloured females, tiny dark dots (fry eyes) become visible through the skin near the gravid spot — birth is 24–48 hours away.
- She hides. Constant sheltering in plants or behind hardscape means she's seeking a safe birthing spot.
- Appetite drops. Refusing food, or spitting it out, is common in the final day or two.
- She hovers in one spot. Often near the heater or in a corner near the surface or bottom — minimal swimming, tail-down posture.
- Contractions. Rhythmic shivering or flexing along her body — delivery is starting.
- She turns skittish or snappy. A normally social female chasing others away is protecting her birthing territory.
- Rapid breathing. Fast gill movement right before and during labour is normal — don't intervene.
Set up the nursery BEFORE the big day
Adult guppies — including mum — will eat fry on sight. Your options, best first:
- Dense moss (our method): thick clumps of java or christmas moss give fry instant cover; the strongest survive naturally with zero stress on the mother.
- Separate birthing tank: move her a few days early (not during labour — stress can abort delivery), return her right after birth.
- Breeder box: works, but confinement stresses females; use only for a day or two.

After the birth: fry care in 30 seconds
