If you keep male and female guppies together, the answer is almost certainly yes, she's pregnant — guppies breed constantly when conditions are right. The real question is how far along she is and what to do about it. Here are the 6 signs, from earliest to "babies tonight".
First: know your females
Females are larger (4–6 cm), rounder, and less colourful than males, with a fan-shaped tail and a visible gravid spot — a patch near the anal fin. Males are smaller, vividly coloured, with a rod-shaped anal fin (gonopodium).
The 6 signs of pregnancy
- You've seen mating. Males constantly chase and "dance" around females. If this is happening, count on pregnancy.
- The gravid spot darkens. The clearest sign: that patch near her anal fin grows larger and darker — from faint orange to deep brown-black — as fry develop.
- Her belly rounds out, then squares off. Gradual swelling over 2–3 weeks; a boxy, angular belly means she's close to delivery.
- Appetite shifts. Eating more than usual mid-pregnancy, then losing interest in food right before birth.
- Behaviour changes. Hiding near plants, hovering near the heater, or chasing off other fish — nesting behaviour.
- Fry eyes visible. In pale females you can literally see tiny dark fry eyes through the skin near the gravid spot — birth within 24–48 hours.
How long until birth?
Gestation is 21–30 days (faster at 25–27°C — see our guppy temperature guide). Expect 20–50 fry, roughly monthly. And yes — females store sperm, so she can keep producing batches for months without a male present.

My female looks pregnant but there's no male — how?
Stored sperm. Females can fertilise up to 8 batches from one mating — shop-bought females are very often already pregnant.
Could the swelling be something else?
A round belly with a dark gravid spot = pregnancy. Swelling with raised scales (pinecone look) or one-sided bulges = illness — quarantine and check your water (water quality guide).
