Start with the water conditions and livestock you already have. The right shrimp for a planted community aquarium may be different from those you choose for a dedicated breeding tank. A colour or common name alone does not tell you everything about their requirements.

Choose a shrimp group

• Neocaridina cherry shrimp: explore red, blue, yellow and other colour varieties. Compare individual shrimp, packs and bundles. Our Red Cherry Shrimp listing is a starting point if you want the classic red variety.
• Caridina shrimp: choose by the particular variety and its stated care needs. Check temperature, pH and hardness requirements before adding them to an existing tank.
• Tiger shrimp: compare the individual listings for pattern, size and care information; do not assume every tiger variety suits the same water.
• Native shrimp: explore the available Australian varieties and read each listing for feeding and habitat requirements. Native shrimp are a separate shopping group from cherry shrimp.

Check the essentials before ordering

Your aquarium should be cycled and ready for livestock. Check ammonia and nitrite, both of which should be zero, and confirm the water conditions suit your chosen shrimp. Prepare sheltered spaces and appropriate filtration, with protection around intakes for small shrimp.

Think about feeding and tank mates as well as colour. Shrimp differ in how they feed, so check the individual product information. Fish may prey on shrimp, especially juveniles.
